Official Tally Shows Bush Won By More Than 7 Million Votes
By The Associated Press
Republican George Bush defeated Democrat Michael Dukakis in the 1988
presidential election by a margin of just over 7 million votes of the
more than 91.5 million cast on Nov. 8, according to final, official
vote tallies from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The president-elect garnered 53.37 percent of the vote, while
Dukakis got 45.67 percent. Minor party candidates received less than
1 percent of the votes.
A total of 91,585,872 votes were cast for candidates who were listed
on the state ballots.
Bush's biggest vote margin came in Florida, where he bested the
Massachusetts governor by about 960,000 votes. His biggest percentage
margin was in Utah, where Bush received 66.2 percent of the total
vote, to 32.04 percent for Dukakis.
Dukakis' biggest vote margin was in New York, which he won by
266,000 votes of more than 6.4 million cast. The District of Columbia
gave Dukakis the highest vote percentage - 83.31 percent - followed
by Rhode Island, where he won 55.65 percent of the vote.
Libertarian nominee Ron Paul was the leading vote-getter among the
non-major party candidates, garnering more than four-tenths of one
percent of the votes. That is above the one-quarter of a percent of
the 1984 vote won by Libertarian candidate David Bergland.
New Alliance candidate Leonora Fulani won more than two-tenths of
one percent, good for second place among the independent hopefuls.
Most of the third-party candidates were on the ballot in only a
handful of states each. Only Fulani was on the ballot in all 50
states. Paul was on the ballot in 47 states.
Here are the final national vote returns and the percentage for each
candidate. A party identification is listed for most candidates,
although many third-party candidates run under different banners in
different states.
